5 Design Tips For A Calm And Inviting Entry Way

The entry way of one’s home is often an area that gets overlooked, simply because we don’t think it’s that important. In reality, this space is oh so important!

It’s the first space that you see when you walk into your home. Your point of entry is what you walk through to get to the other areas in your home and it can play a huge role in how you feel throughout the rest of your day.

Whatever type of chaos that greets you at the door, whether it be clutter or uninviting decor, you could be carrying that negative energy throughout the rest of your home.

Wouldn’t it be nice to walk into your home and immediately feel a sense of calm and relaxation and carry that feeling where ever you go?

You can create a calming entry way with these 5 design tips.

Add Seating

A pretty easy and painless way to instantly make your entry way warm and inviting is to add some type of seating.  Seating is great for an entry way because it can serve as both a functional and decorative purpose. Some great ideas for seating could be:

  • A small bench - When choosing a bench, opt for an open bench so that you can store some type of shoe storage underneath, which we will dive into a little more in the next section.

  • Mud room style seating area - For a mud room style seating area, it could be a built-in bench with open or closed storage for belongings and wall hooks to hang your coats, purses and backpacks.

  • A chair - A chair could be a quick way to add seating. It doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive, but one that you love and can live with for a long time.

Have Shoe Storage

The next thing you’ll want to do is add some type of shoe storage. You can have an awesome seating area but the last thing you want to look at is a beautiful bench with a pile of shoes scattered all around it. Shoe storage can be achieved in the following ways:

  • Tiered shoe rack

  • Baskets – You can do this with designated baskets for each person of the household.

  • Over the door shoe rack – This one is a great budget friendly and clutter free option and will work perfectly if you have a coat closet nearby

Add Decorative Elements

Add Mirrors or hang up an art piece. Mirrors are great they contribute to both the aesthetics and the functionality of your entryway. For one, they can create the illusion of a bigger space. Secondly, mirrors are great at reflecting light which will make the space look and feel brighter. A nice round wall hung mirror could be a great addition if you have a square shaped bench as it will help create some balance. And lastly, when you’re headed out the door for the day, whether it be for work, errands or a meeting, you may need a mirror to double check your appearance before you leave.

Have A Landing Station

A console table is a great way to add personality to your entry way but to also provide storage and organization. This can be a great spot for setting down your purse, wallet or keys. A console table can also be great for displaying decorative items such as plants, candles, books, or a small decorative bowl.

Don’t Forget Color

Finally, you can add some UMPH to your entry way by painting it with colors that tie into the decor of your home.

If painting is not an option, you can get a fun art piece to hang instead of a mirror. An art piece can be a great stand-alone option if your entry way is too small for other bulky items.
